A 24-year-old graduate is delighted with her permanent contract as a garbage collector: “Now I will be able to buy a car”

Each citizen should be free to choose the profession they wish to exercise, according to their aptitudes and preferences, but the reality is often very different from this sacrosanct vision. All jobs are decent, there is no doubt, but those who choose to embark on a long education imagine, at the very least, that they will one day be able to work in the same field. Unfortunately, this desire is often disappointed by the harsh reality: few opportunities to emerge, unfair competition and poverty wages. The woman at the center of this story, although a graduate for a while, is one of the many young people who had to give up this dream.

Federica Castiglia is 24 years old and has a degree in optics and optometry, but unfortunately the job market has not rewarded her dedication to her studies: «I was very undecided about my course, says the young woman, I chose optics after attending a conference that made an impression on me, registered and graduated. Believe me: I really tried hard, but finding a job was difficult. Only apprenticeship contracts, without any guarantees or prospects”. Things changed after Federica, together with other young people, won a competition to be hired as a garbage collector by Asìa, the municipal waste collection company in Naples, her hometown: «Now I am in a safe place, where rights are respected and where pay corresponds to hours worked. Asìa represents a certainty for my future”.

Some will frown: after so many years of study, this girl has now chosen to be a garbage collector? For Federica, the answer is very simple: «It’s a real, stable job and, let’s face it, it’s a permanent position that offers ample guarantees. And I don’t find anything weird about a graduate freely choosing to be a garbage collector as a profession.»

For Federica, being a garbage collector is a job of great dignity and she stresses that the best feeling is to no longer have to financially depend on her parents, a retired police officer and a housewife, and to have settled down to be able to plan his future. A stable job allows her to realize those little dreams that previously seemed impossible to her, such as buying a car: Federica does not regret having studied, but she admits that she was not rewarded for it. Luckily for her, everything turned out well in the end.

«We start with an apprenticeship contract of 1,100 euros gross, of which I don’t know how much it will be net,» said Federica, who is nevertheless very happy: «But the turning point is that I will now have a basis to plan the future. Carry out many projects. And I plan to spend my life in this business. Because you don’t give up a permanent job, especially when it’s hard to find something else. »

We can only wish Federica, and all new hires, good luck!
