About 30 shelter dogs evacuated from Puerto Rico to protect them from hurricanes

They no longer have to fear the damage caused by Hurricane Fiona in Puerto Rico. 32 dogs left the Caribbean island and arrived 12 hours later on the East Coast of the United States, during an emergency operation that saved hundreds of animals.

Rescue missions for animals in shelters impacted by hurricanes Ian and Fiona continue. It was in this context that 32 dogs were evacuated from Puerto Rican shelters and taken to West Virginia, reported WOWTV.

Airlifted, the quadrupeds arrived on the morning of Thursday, October 6 at Yeager Airport in Charleston. They were expected by the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association team to take care of them in their shelter.

The trip was provided by the charity Wings Rescue, with support from Petco Love.

„It’s very exciting for us to see all of these organizations come together to help Puerto Rico […], and we’re happy to be a part of it,“ said Bethany Hiveley, executive director of the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association.

She said this was the 3rd time the association had taken in animals evacuated due to a hurricane, but the first from a location outside the US borders (Puerto Rico is an organized unincorporated territory of the United States). United).

Hurricane Fiona had caused extensive damage on the island of Puerto Rico, depriving the population of electricity and causing heavy rains. The 32 dogs were lucky to survive.

The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association is now looking for adoptive families for them and has launched a call for donations.
